Here are some ideas for a Father’s Day book that Here are some ideas for a Father’s Day book that might make dad glad he can’t go out.⠀
⠀
Does dad watch the history channel - maybe a little too much?⠀
⠀
Fiction Idea - Hilary Mantel’s series on Thomas Cromwell and his complicated relationship with Henry VIII is smart and gritty. Cromwell had the mind of a 21st century financier and entrepreneur while living in a time of absolute monarchs and churches that could execute you on a whim. Mantel brings the man and his time to life in three books that are fun to read. Start dad out with Wolf Hall and you’ll have Bring Up the Bodies and The Mirror and the Light for future gifts. Or get him all three and keep dad happy through the summer.⠀
⠀
Non-Fiction Idea – MacArthur’s Air Force, by Noe Valley’s own Bill Yenne, tells the story of the Army Air Corps under Douglas MacArthur’s command in the Western Pacific theater in World War II. The general grows from a skeptic about the uses of air power to developing it as an important component of his strategy to defeat Japan. ⠀
⠀
Is dad sick of being cooped up?⠀
⠀
A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles, is the tale of a Russian aristocrat under house arrest by the Soviets in a luxury hotel in Moscow – for over thirty years. This guy thrives in a difficult situation and turns sheltering in place into an art form.⠀
⠀
Does dad like irreverent humor? Does he need a good laugh?⠀
⠀
Christopher Moore has written books like You Suck, about vampires at the Marina Safeway, and Lamb – the Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal. See what I mean by irreverent? His latest San Francisco book, Noir, takes place in North Beach and Chinatown shortly after World War II. It’s about a blonde, a bartender, a snake, space aliens, and the Bohemian Grove. Or how about his latest in hardcover, Shakespeare for Squirrels, which reimagines A Midsummer Night's Dream as a madcap murder mystery. ⠀

A huge societal shift has occurred in the last few A huge societal shift has occurred in the last few weeks. As a result, we have a couple of hundred special orders in our system for books that speak to the pervasive racial problems that continue to undermine our society. The demand for these titles is like nothing I’ve seen during my years of bookselling. It speaks to a collective determination that I hope we will follow through on. May these books be small seeds that take root throughout our community in the months ahead.⠀
⠀
So many orders are still in our system because the publishing industry is struggling to meet this huge demand during a time when there are already pandemic-related challenges. If you have such a book on order with us, we ask your patience for another couple of weeks so that everyone along the supply chain can work safely while getting it to you.⠀
